You Don’t Need the Dealer to Fix Your Hybrid or Electric Vehicle

Once, It Was Hard to Find a Repair Shop. Not Anymore.

Though still fairly rare, it’s becoming more and more common to see electric cars on the road. Not only are they eco-friendly, at least one of them – the Tesla – has an added, unforeseen perk: Thieves leave it alone. That’s right. According to a May 8 story at Marketwatch.com, only four Teslas have been stolen in the U.S. since the auto maker rolled out mass production of the vehicle here. The article cites statistics from the National Insurance Crime Bureau showing no Teslas were reported stolen in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012. Only one was reported stolen in 2011 and three were reported taken last year. Apparently, there are many reasons for this, including the fact that it’s an unusual car and  fewer high-end vehicles are stolen anyway. But our favorite reason is the thing that makes the Tesla and other electric vehicles special – the battery. Take the car and, as the article says, “if you drive the Tesla like you stole it, you may kill the battery – and it’s hard to run from the cops with a car that doesn’t have any charge.”

But while you may not have to worry too much about thieves taking your electric, or hybrid, car, truck or SUV, you may be concerned about where to take it for routine maintenance or for more serious issues. You could always take it to the dealer. But maybe the dealer isn’t conveniently located. And maybe you’d prefer someone who’ll give you – and your vehicle – more personal attention.
