When you need an expert Madison transmission repair shop, think Terry’s Car Care.
It’s Presidents Day and both you and the kids have the day off so you’re looking forward to a day skiing and ice skating in Madison’s parks. Unfortunately, you’re going to be disappointed because your car refuses to stay in gear. You put it in drive and it slips right out.
Sounds as if you’ve encountered one of the most common cold weather car problems – a slipping transmission.
“Automatic transmission problems in cold weather [are] very common,” buzzle.com says. “This condition is also called transmission slipping. It’s caused only when the vehicle is surrounded with an ice-cold weather. In such cases, the system freezes and contracts, plus the fuel line fluid begins to leak from the seals resulting in a low line pressure. If the vehicle faces a low line pressure or inadequate fuel supply within the system, the gears would refuse to function correctly and that would cause slipping.”
Auto.howstuffworks.com adds that “on a transmission in which the gears slip, the car can spontaneously pop out of the gear it’s in while driving and (in a manual) force the stick back into neutral. …
“This is unnerving at best and potentially dangerous at worst: when you mash the gas pedal to avoid an out-of-control vehicle, the last thing you want is a transmission that doesn’t get power to the wheels. No need to scratch your head over whether this is trouble or not: if it happens, you know it’s time to have your transmission examined.”
Of course, other transmission problems can arise in cold weather in part because the low temperature causes the transmission fluid to thicken and become sluggish.
