Time to Retire Those Snow Tires | Tires

Now that the temperatures have risen, it’s time to change your tires for the spring and summer driving ahead.

Spring has truly sprung – all the golf courses in Madison parks are finally open. That’s not only a sign that (most of) the cold weather is behind us until next winter. It’s also a reminder that it’s time to change your tires from snow tires to your summer, or all-season, set.

If you’re wondering whether you really need to change out your tires – yes, you do. As the Canadian website, wheels.ca, points out: “Winter tires can’t take [the] heat of spring and summer. … Self-preservation should be the motive: the changeover may help you avoid a collision or a blowout.”

The reasoning lies in the formula for the rubber, wheels says: “Summer tires in winter turn hard as hockey pucks; in winter, all-season tires start to lose grip as temps drop below +7C (44.6F) and are virtually useless for grip below -10C (-50F). Winter tires lose grip as the temperatures climb above +7 C. Just as all-seasons wear tread faster in winter, winters wear faster in summer.”

Switchover time is also a good time to have the trusted tire service technicians at Terry’s Car Care take a look at your brakes, wheels and struts to make sure they weathered the winter. Locally owned, Terry’s has been the expert tire repair and tire service shop in Madison for almost 50 years.
